This is the classic claw-and-rope mining game rebuilt as a head-to-head duel. Two miners share one shaft, so every nugget you leave behind is a nugget your opponent gets to look at on their turn. That moves the interesting question from "what is worth the most?" to "what is worth the most that they can still reach?"

How a turn actually works
A turn is a time box, not a single shot. Drag anywhere in the shaft — the claw follows your finger — and let go to send it down at the angle you chose. Then do it again, and again, until your clock runs out. The default turn timer is 30 seconds, and the host can set the room to 20, 30, 40, 60 or 90 seconds before the match starts.
The claw also swings on its own, sweeping the shaft like a slow pendulum, and it swings a little faster as your seconds drain — the closing moments of a turn are the tensest in the game. A match runs exactly 12 turns, six each, so both miners get the same number of chances and no coin flip decides the length of the game.
The shaft is dark, and the lamp rides the claw
This is the one mechanic that separates the online duel from the single-player original, and it is the reason experienced players beat new ones so consistently. The mine is unlit. The lamp travels with the claw, so whatever the claw is pointing at is lit up and everything else is an anonymous "?". Aiming and scouting are the same motion.
And nothing stays revealed. Sweep the beam past a lump and it goes dark again. A large gold nugget and a barrel of TNT look identical until you light them, which means what you found is something you have to remember. A wide, unhurried sweep at the start of a turn is frequently worth more than an immediate grab.
What is down there, and what it pays
| Find | Base value | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Diamond | 600 | The best ratio in the mine — top value and light, so it comes up fast |
| Large gold | 350 | Heavy: a deep one can eat most of a turn |
| Mole with a gem | 260 | It moves along its band — aim where it is going, not where it is |
| Medium gold | 150 | The reliable combo filler |
| Small gold | 50 | Light and quick — perfect for keeping a streak alive |
| Sealed chest | 0–1200 | The loot stays secret until the lid pops at the surface |
| Rock / bone / skull | 10 / 20 / 35 | Heavy, near-worthless, and they break your combo |
| TNT barrel | — | Detonates only if the claw touches it, wiping out everything nearby |
Those are base values. Two multipliers sit on top of them, and understanding those two numbers is most of the skill in this game.
Depth greed: up to +60% at the bottom
The same mineral pays more the deeper it sits, scaling up to +60% at the very floor of the shaft. A shallow band just under the surface pays no depth bonus at all, so those finds are pure speed plays rather than money plays.
The cost is time. Both legs of the trip are distance-based: the drop takes roughly two tenths of a second up close and around eight tenths to the deepest reachable point, while the haul back up is divided by the cargo's weight and can run to five and a half seconds for the heaviest, deepest pull. If your timer expires mid-haul, the mineral drops back where it was hanging and you bank nothing — late in a turn, a deep large gold nugget is a bet, not a plan.
The combo ladder: ×1.5 → ×2 → ×3
Haul valuables back to back and the payout escalates. The first two pay face value, the third consecutive valuable pays ×1.5, the fourth ×2, and the fifth and every one after it ×3. Rock, bone and skull break the streak. So does a miss. So does setting off TNT.
This is why cheap gold has a job. A 50-value nugget that lands in about a second is not there to make you rich — it is there to keep the ladder climbing so that the diamond you scouted earlier banks 1800 instead of 600. Sequencing your drops is a bigger lever than picking the single most valuable thing on the board.
Power-ups: scissors, speed and the money bag
- Scissors — the only directly aggressive tool in the game. Collecting a pair arms a charge that lets you cut your rival's rope mid-haul, dropping whatever they were pulling straight back into the dirt. The charge is spent when you use it, and collecting another pair re-arms it.
- Speed — doubles the reel speed of your next pull, and each player can bank at most two of them. It drifts slowly around the shaft, so it takes real aiming. Save it for something deep and heavy, where it converts into a whole extra drop.
- Money bag — an instant 200, and light enough to come straight back up, which makes it the safest way to open a combo.
The chest, the mole and the TNT
The sealed chest is the mine's lottery ticket. Its contents are decided on the server and stay hidden until the lid pops at the surface: it can come up empty, or pay 120, 300, 650 or — rarely — a match-winning 1200. It also hauls like a rock, so it is a gamble in seconds as well as in value.
The mole carries a gem worth 260 and scuttles back and forth along its own band. You cannot grab it where it is, only where it is going to be, which makes it the most satisfying catch in the shaft.
TNT does nothing at all until the claw arrives — it detonates on contact only, and then destroys everything inside its blast radius, valuables included. That cuts both ways: a barrel sitting in the middle of a cluster your opponent has clearly been eyeing is sometimes a weapon rather than a hazard.
Falling behind is not fatal
The mine restocks between turns, keeping a target number of valuable minerals on the board at all times, so an early run of luck can never leave the shaft picked clean for the player who is behind. On top of that, the trailing miner earns a comeback bonus of up to +40% on valuable pulls, scaling with the size of the deficit. Put that together with the ×3 combo ladder and a strong final turn genuinely swings matches.
Five tips that actually move your score
- Scout on the way in. The claw is the lamp, so spend the first drop of a turn lighting the map.
- Diamonds beat big gold. 600 at the lightest weight in the game comes up almost as fast as a 50-value nugget; large gold pays 350 and hauls like an anchor.
- Chain small before big. Two quick, cheap grabs put you on ×3 before you commit to the expensive one.
- Check the clock before a deep grab. A haul that outlives the timer pays exactly zero.
- Hold the scissors for their reel, not yours. Cutting a deep 350 haul costs your opponent the mineral and the seconds they spent on it.
Ready to dig? Here is how to start
Open Gold Miner and add a bot at Easy, Medium or Hard for an instant match, or open a private room and send a friend the link — no account needed on either side. A match against a single bot is unrated, which makes it the right place to learn the shaft; a table with two real players counts toward your rating and the leaderboard. Everything works identically on phone and desktop, because the whole control scheme is one drag: point, release, haul.
