Name Place Animal Thing Hard Letters: Q, X, Z Answers
The way to beat name place animal thing hard letters is to stop hunting for a perfect word in every box and fill the boxes where rare letters are easy: city, animal and plant. The table below lists the thinnest letters the online game can draw, with a real answer for each category.

| Letter | In the game | Name | City | Animal | Plant | Object |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| X | drawn (hard) | Xavier | Xi'an | — | — | X-ray machine |

Why a letter is rare
A letter is rare in a language because few words begin with it, not because it is rare inside words. Some letters appear mid-word all the time and almost never open one. Others open words only in borrowed names. That is why a rare letter feels impossible in the name box (people carry native names) and survivable in the city box (places keep their foreign spellings).
The online game measures this directly. A letter can be drawn only if at least 3 of the 5 categories have at least 2 entries starting with it in the word list. Letters that fail that test never come up, so you will never face a round where the answer does not exist. The first table above shows which letters those are in this language.
Which categories rescue you
Start with the box where the rare letter is most forgiving, not with the first box on the sheet. Cities and animals borrow from many languages, so they carry the odd letters. Plants and objects are the middle ground. Names are the trap: you can only write a first name, and few start with a rare letter.
| Category | On a rare letter |
|---|---|
| Name | Hardest. Only first names count, and few start with a rare letter. |
| City | Easiest. Cities keep foreign spellings, so rare letters are common here. |
| Animal | Easy. Exotic animals carry unusual starting letters. |
| Plant | Medium. Fruits, flowers and trees from other regions help. |
| Object | Hard. Everyday words rarely start with a rare letter. Think tools and technical items. |
The answer bank below gives words for exactly these thin letters.
| Category | Hardest letters and an answer that saves you |
|---|---|
| Name | Q: Quinn · X: Xavier · U: Ursula |
| City | X: Xi'an · Q: Quebec City · E: Edinburgh |
| Animal | Q: Quail · U: Urchin · Z: Zebra |
| Plant | Q: Quinoa · U: Umbrella plant · Z: Zucchini |

Why a rare answer pays double
Scoring is the reason to take the hard letter seriously. A valid answer that nobody else wrote scores 10. A valid answer that someone else also wrote scores 5, and it is a flat 5 for every player who wrote it, whether two people or five did. A wrong, empty or voted-down answer scores 0. Sharing is checked per category, so the same word in two different boxes does not count as shared.
On a common letter, every careful player writes the obvious word and everyone gets 5. On a rare letter, half the table leaves the box blank, and the one person who found a valid word takes the full 10. A blank box scores 0 whatever the letter, so a risky answer never loses you points compared with leaving it empty. The only price is time.

Will my answer be accepted?
An answer is checked in this order. First it is cleaned up: capitals, spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are ignored. Then it must start with the round's letter, or it scores 0. If the word is on the game's list for that category, it passes instantly. If it is not on the list but starts with the right letter, the other players vote on it for up to 14 seconds. You never vote on your own answer.
A tie in the vote passes, so the answer is accepted when yes votes are at least equal to no votes. If nobody votes on it at all, the game accepts it when it has at least 2 letters and starts with the right letter. A real but uncommon word is therefore worth writing even when you doubt it is on the list.
The last seconds of a round
The default writing clock is 60 seconds, and the room can set 45 or 90. By default, when anyone presses STOP, the table gets at most 10 more seconds. If the clock has less left than that, the clock wins: a STOP at second 55 of 60 leaves 5 seconds. So when a rival calls STOP, drop the perfect word and write the best word you have.
The first player to press STOP earns +5, but only if at least 3 of their answers scored. That makes a rare-letter round a gamble for the stopper: with too few valid boxes the bonus is gone. You can keep editing a box until you press STOP yourself, and after that your sheet is locked. A room can instead be set to "Until time runs out", where STOP does not shorten the clock.
House rule: re-draw on a dead letter
On paper, a letter that nobody can use ruins a round, so many tables agree to re-draw it. The online game already does this for you. It draws only from the letters that pass the 3-category test, and it builds one shuffled queue of them per match, so a letter never repeats. For a paper game, a good house rule is the same: if the table cannot name a word in at least three categories within a few seconds, re-draw.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the hardest letter in Name Place Animal Thing?
It depends on the language, because it depends on how many words begin with the letter. The letters that start the fewest names, cities and objects are the hard ones. The tables in this post show the thinnest letters of the online game's word list.
Can I get a letter I can't answer in the online game?
No. A letter is drawn only if at least 3 categories have at least 2 words starting with it in the game's list. Letters that fail that test never come up, and a letter never repeats in one match.
What do I write when I'm stuck on a hard letter?
Skip the name box and write the city, animal and plant first. They carry the unusual starting letters. Then go back to the name and the object with whatever time is left.
How many points does a rare answer get?
A valid answer nobody else wrote scores 10. If another player wrote the same word in that category, you both get 5. Empty, wrong or voted-down answers score 0.
Does the game accept a word that is not on its list?
Yes, if it starts with the round's letter. The other players vote on it, and a tie passes. If nobody votes, it is accepted when it has at least 2 letters.
Should I re-draw a dead letter in a paper game?
Yes, it is a sound house rule. Agree before the round that a letter is re-drawn if the table cannot name a word in at least three categories. The online game does the same by drawing only usable letters.
