Free Word Games Online With No Download: What to Play
Free word games online with no download come in a handful of types, and two of them run in your browser on Playgridia: a 5-letter guessing game and a letter-and-category sheet. The rest of the genre, from hangman to crosswords, is worth knowing so you can pick by situation instead of by habit.
The main types of word game
Most word games are one of seven formats. The last column says what you can actually play here.
| Type | On Playgridia? | How it plays Solo or with people · Typical length |
|---|---|---|
| Five-letter guessing | Yes: Word Duel | Find a hidden 5-letter word in six tries, with green and yellow clues Both · A few minutes |
| Letter-and-category rounds | Yes: Categories | Name Place Animal Thing: A letter comes up; fill five fields with words that start with it Needs people or bots · 5 to 10 minutes |
| Hangman | Rules only: how to play hangman | Call letters to fill blanks before the drawing is finished Two or more on paper · 2 to 5 minutes |
| Word search | Not on this site | Find listed words hidden in a letter grid Solo · Minutes per grid |
| Crossword | Not on this site | Solve clues that interlock on a grid Mostly solo · Minutes to an hour |
| Letter-connect and anagram puzzles | Not on this site | Build words from a set of given letters Solo · Short levels |
| Word chain | Not on this site | Each word must start with the last letter of the previous one Two or more · As long as you like |
On the Google Play word chart (US, Top free, checked 2026-11-06) the top places go to word search, letter-connect and crossword puzzles. A 5-letter guessing game first appears at number 10. Solo puzzle apps dominate the download charts, but that says little about which format is best with other people at the table.
What "no download, no signup" means here
Both games run in the browser, so there is nothing to install. You can start without registering: the Play now button seats you at a table with two bots in one tap, and a guest account is created for you. Guests can play both games.
To play with friends, the room screen has a "Link only" button. It hides the room from the public lists, so only people you send the link to can join. A room opened by a guest seats at most four players; the fifth and sixth seats need a registered room owner. Both games take two to six seats, and bots fill any empty chair.
Five-letter guessing: Word Duel
Everyone at the table guesses the same hidden 5-letter word at the same moment. You get six tries. After each guess every tile turns green (right letter, right place), amber-yellow (in the word, wrong place) or gray (not in the word). You see the color grids of your rivals live, never their letters.

A word that is not in the list costs nothing, and there is no hard mode, so a guess does not have to reuse earlier clues. Points depend on how fast you solve: 60 for a solve in one guess, down to 10 for six, plus a small bonus for the first three solvers. There is no daily limit on rounds, which is why it suits repeat play. The word language is set per room, separately from the site language, and includes Spanish, French and Korean. For tactics see word guessing strategy tips and the unlimited 5-letter game.
Letter-and-category rounds: Categories
This is the paper classic known as Name Place Animal Thing, Tutti Frutti or petit bac, depending on where you grew up. A letter is drawn, and everyone fills five fields at once: name, city, animal, plant and object. A listed answer that nobody else wrote scores 10; one that someone else also wrote scores 5. Anyone can press STOP, and the first to do so earns 5 extra if at least three of their answers scored. By default the others then get 10 more seconds.

Answers that are not in the list go to a table vote, and a tie passes. The letter never repeats within a match. Details are on the Categories page.
How long a round takes
| Word Duel | Categories | |
|---|---|---|
| Round clock | 1:30, 2:00, 2:30 or 3:00 (default 2:00) | 45, 60 or 90 seconds of writing (default 60) |
| Rounds per match | 1, 3 or 5 (default 3) | 3, 5 or 8 (default 5) |
| First match for a new player | One round | Three rounds |
| Longest default match | About 6.5 minutes | About 7 minutes |
Those are upper bounds from the round clocks plus the short intro and reveal screens. A Word Duel round ends as soon as everyone has solved or run out of tries, and 20 seconds after the first solve. A Categories round ends early when everyone presses STOP.
Choosing by situation
A group of friends
Categories handles up to six players and rewards fast, odd answers, so the table gets loud. Word Duel also seats up to six and nobody waits for a turn. Send a link-only room. More in word games with friends.
One friend
Word Duel works well head to head, and the rules for two are in the two-player guide. If you want something to play without any screen, hangman on paper needs only a pen.
A two-minute break
Choose Word Duel with one round, set in the room's Match settings. Categories needs several minutes for a full match.
Learning a language
Both games let you set the word language per room, so you can practice vocabulary in a language other than your interface language. See vocabulary games for adults.
What to do next
If you have two minutes, open Word Duel, tap Play now and finish one round against the bots. If you have a group, make a link-only room in Categories and send the link before anyone has to install anything.
Word Duel and Categories are independent games with their own word lists.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play word games online for free without downloading anything?
Yes. Word Duel and Categories both run in the browser, so there is nothing to install. The Play now button starts a match against two bots in one tap, with no signup.
Do I need an account to play with friends?
No. A guest account is created for you, and guests can play both games. On the room screen the Link only button keeps the room out of the public lists, so only people with your link can join. A room opened by a guest seats up to four players.
Which word game is best for a big group?
Categories fits a group best: up to six players write at the same time, the table votes on unlisted answers, and a tie counts for the answer. Word Duel also seats up to six, and everyone guesses the same word at once.
How long does one round take?
A Word Duel round is capped by a clock of 1:30 to 3:00, default 2:00, and ends sooner when everyone is done. A Categories round gives 45, 60 or 90 seconds of writing, default 60, plus a short vote and reveal.
Is there a hangman game on Playgridia?
No. There is a written guide to the paper rules, and Word Duel is the online game that uses the same kind of letter-by-letter deduction. Categories covers the paper letter-and-category game instead.
Is there a limit on how many rounds I can play?
No. Word Duel has no daily limit on matches or rounds, and no hard mode, so a guess does not have to reuse earlier clues. You can play as many rounds as you like, against bots or other players.
