Rummy Joker Rules: How Many, Two Together, Points

The rummy joker rules on this table are short: the deck is 2 standard decks plus 4 jokers, 108 cards in all, a joker stands in for any card, and one left in your hand costs 20 points. House rules vary from group to group, so the table below lists what is fixed on this table.

How many jokers are in rummy?

Four. The table game uses two 52-card decks and 4 jokers, which makes 108 cards, and every seat is dealt 13 cards. Gin Rummy is a different game on the same site: one deck, 52 cards, no jokers at all.

Because the deck is doubled, the same card can appear twice. That matters for sets, as you will see below. For the deal and the draw, see how to play rummy.

A meld needs at least 2 natural cards

A natural is any ordinary card. Every meld, set or run, must contain at least two of them. So a meld can never be all jokers, and one natural plus two jokers is refused too. Jokers fill gaps; they cannot build a meld alone.

Can you put two jokers together?

It depends on the meld.

In a set

A 3-card set takes at most 1 joker. A 4-card set takes at most 2, so 7S 7H J J is legal: two naturals, two jokers. A set never grows past 4 cards, and each natural must be in a different suit. Because of the two decks, 7S 7S 7D is not a set.

In a run

A run has no fixed joker cap, but two jokers may never sit next to each other. 5H J 7H J 9H is legal, because each joker has a natural on both sides. 5H J J 8H is rejected. If you hand the server a run in the wrong order it will try to place the jokers for you.

Swapping a joker off the table

Once you have opened, a natural that fills a joker's slot exactly takes the joker's place and the joker comes into your hand. In a run the card must match the slot's rank and suit. In a set it must be the right rank in a suit the set does not already hold.

Two limits: you cannot swap before opening, and a joker cannot swap for another joker. The freed joker must be played again that same turn, in a new meld or laid onto an existing one, so only swap when you have somewhere to put it.

Taking a joker from the discard pile

You may take the top discard if it is a joker. Taking from the pile is always one card, never the whole pile, and a card taken from the pile must be placed in a meld or laid off before you can discard. A joker is no exception. You can discard a joker too, but think twice: the next player can take it.

What a joker is worth

In your hand at the end of a deal, a joker costs 20 points. Every rival's leftover cards are added up as your score when you go out, so a joker in an opponent's hand is the most expensive single card there is. An ace costs 11, face cards 10.

On the table, a joker counts as the card it replaces. 5H J 7H J 9H is worth 35 toward your opening. The default opening threshold is 40, with 30 and 51 as room options. The full rules are in rummy scoring and opening points.

When to hold a joker and when to use it

  • Early, with few melds possible: hold it. It is the card most likely to complete your opening.
  • Opening close but short: play it. A joker in a high slot adds real points, since it takes the slot's value.
  • Rivals are shedding cards fast: get it out of your hand. 20 points is more than any face card.
  • A rival is one card from going out: do not discard it, it can be picked up.

Playing two players? The same rules apply, and the guide to rummy rules for 2 players covers the differences in pace.

So what now? Open a table, deal in, and try a 7S 7H J J set once so the limit sticks. Then keep one habit: before you swap a joker, check you can place it this turn. You can play free as a guest, no signup, at Rummy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many jokers are in a rummy deck?

On this table the deck is two 52-card decks plus 4 jokers, 108 cards in total. Each player is dealt 13 cards. Gin Rummy uses a single 52-card deck with no jokers.

Can you put two jokers together in rummy?

Not side by side in a run: 5H J J 8H is rejected, while 5H J 7H J 9H is fine. In a 4-card set two jokers are allowed, for example 7S 7H J J. A 3-card set takes only one.

How many points is a joker worth in rummy?

In a meld it counts as the card it replaces, so 5H J 7H J 9H is worth 35 toward the opening. Left in your hand when a rival goes out, it costs 20 points, more than an ace at 11 or a face card at 10.

Can you take a joker from the table?

Yes, but only after you have opened. Play a natural that fits the joker's slot exactly, and the joker moves to your hand. You must play it again that turn.

Can I pick up a joker from the discard pile?

Yes, a joker on top of the pile can be taken. You take just that one card, and you must place it in a meld or lay it off before you can discard.

Does Gin Rummy have jokers?

No. Gin Rummy is played with one 52-card deck and no jokers, and aces count low only.
