2 Player Strategy Games Online: Free War Duels

The best 2 player strategy games online are the ones where the duel is the normal shape of the game, not a side mode. Warfront is a free turn-based war game on a square grid, and its default table is exactly two seats: one commander against one, south against north. You can send a friend a link and start in a minute, or practise against a bot first.

Turn 1 of a two-player match on Twin Rivers: a blue base at the top and a red base at the bottom, each behind grey walls with a hero and three soldiers, two rivers and bridges between them.
Turn 1 of a duel. Everything is in view from the first move.

Why a two-player war game plays differently

With two seats there is no third party to hide behind. Nobody else can weaken your opponent for you, and nobody can gang up on you. Every loss is a result of what one other mind decided.

The rules are the same as in bigger games. Each player leads one hero and a bought army, captures villages, gold mines and castles (the Keep on the board) for gold, and wins by killing the enemy commander or capturing his headquarters. Damage is deterministic and the game shows a forecast before you commit, so a duel is decided by reading, not by luck.

The hero pick is your first read of the opponent. The Warlord has 24 HP and is the sturdiest commander. The Archmage has 17 HP but his Meteor reaches four tiles and hits an area for 11 damage once it is charged. If your opponent picks the Archmage, you know they will want to stay behind a screen of soldiers, and you can plan to reach that commander.

Start a duel with a friend

  1. Open the Warfront page and create a room.
  2. Share the room link. Your friend opens it and takes the seat. No account and no download are needed.
  3. Switch on Link only if you do not want strangers to find the table. It then leaves the public lists and only the link opens it. There is no password and no invite code.
  4. Each player picks a hero: Warlord, Archmage, Ranger or Sky Marshal. All four are free, and picking the hero also claims your army colour.
  5. Choose the move clock: 60, 120, 180, 240 or 600 seconds per move. The default is 120.

A timeout is not a forfeit. The game ends that seat's turn for it and moves no units, so a slow player loses tempo, not the match. Income, healing and hero charge still run.

Practise against a bot first

If you have not played before, add a bot to the second seat. There are three levels: easy, medium and hard. Medium is the room default. The game page also has a Learn to Play button that starts a short match with coaching switched on. The first Play Now match lasts 15 turns, while the standard limit is 30.

For your first turns and what to buy, read the Warfront strategy guide.

The second seat starts richer

Moving first is an edge, so the later seats get more gold. Starting gold is 300 for the first seat and 450 for the second. That extra 150 is the second player's payment for moving second.

It matters because gold is the only resource. There are no workers and no gathering, so a larger first purse becomes soldiers on the board immediately. For scale, 450 is also the price of the Kingdom Age, the first upgrade, which cannot be bought before turn 4. If you are second, decide early whether the money goes into soldiers or into the age.

The early rhythm of a duel on Twin Rivers

Twin Rivers is the default map: 11 tiles wide, 17 high, two rivers with four bridge tiles and an open middle. It is free for everyone. Each side starts with two Swordsmen, one Archer and the hero on a walled headquarters, with a barracks, a castle and a village nearby.

In our bot simulations (medium bots, ten seeds) the first contact on Twin Rivers came around round 2. That is fast. Expect to fight before you have finished expanding, so claim the nearest village and keep your hero behind your soldiers: losing him ends the game. Over six bot-only matches on this map the average length was about 19 rounds. On our site lately the median finished match ran about 11 minutes.

The Citadel, a wide map with a ring of rock and four gates, is slower: first contact came around round 5 in the same simulations. Maps other than Twin Rivers are sold as one-match tickets, and a map changes terrain, never a stat.

Seat shapes compared

SeatsShapeWhat changes
21v1Pure duel. Second seat gets 450 gold against 300.
3, teams2v1A pair against one boosted solo commander: gold x1.4, income x1.05, upkeep 14%, hero HP x1.25.
3, free-for-allThree commandersNo allies. The leader carries a bounty and a trailing seat gets income relief.
4, teams2v2A team falls only when both its seats are eliminated.
4, free-for-allFour commandersSame bounty and relief rules, more fronts to watch.

The mode choice appears only from three seats. With two players it is always a 1v1.

The room screen: the host is marked ready, with buttons for an Easy, Medium or Hard bot, Invite a friend, Share link and Link only.
Everything a duel needs on one screen: a bot, a friend or a link.

What to do with this

Send one friend a link, pick Twin Rivers, keep the 120 second clock and play a 15-turn match. If you would rather see the whole setup first, war games online with no download walks through it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best 2 player strategy games online for playing with a friend?

Pick a game that works as a duel by default and lets your friend join from a link. In Warfront the default table is two seats, your friend opens the room link and sits with no account and no download, and the host can switch on Link only so the table stays out of public lists.

Is Warfront fair when one player moves first?

The second seat starts with 450 gold against 300 for the first seat, which offsets moving second. Damage has no dice, so after the opening the result depends on decisions rather than luck.

What happens if my opponent runs out of time on a move?

Nothing is forfeited. The game ends that seat's turn for it, no unit is moved, and income, healing and hero charge still run. The move clock can be set to 60, 120, 180, 240 or 600 seconds.

Can I practise a 2 player strategy game alone first?

Yes. Add a bot to the second seat and pick easy, medium or hard. The game page also has a Learn to Play button that starts a short match with coaching on.

Do both players need an account to play?

No. A friend who opens your room link is seated as a guest. Guests can play the default map, Twin Rivers. Other maps are one-match tickets that need an account to buy.
