War Games Online: Free, No Download, Play in Browser

The quickest way to play war games online without installing anything is a turn-based tactics game in your browser: open Warfront, tap Play Now and you are in a 15-turn battle against a bot. No account and no download are needed, and it works on a phone.

A close fight at a river bridge: a curved slash of light lands as cavalry, swordsmen and a purple-robed commander clash beside the water.

What "no download" means here

The game runs in the browser tab. A guest seat is enough to play the default map, Twin Rivers. Playgridia also has an Android app on Google Play, but it is optional. Nothing is hidden behind it.

One honest note about phones: Twin Rivers and the Golden Plains map fit on one screen. The four wide maps are bigger than a phone, so you drag to pan and pinch to zoom.

Which kind of online war game is this?

"War game" covers very different things. Shooters want fast reflexes. Real-time strategy games ask you to gather, build and give orders while the clock runs. Grand strategy games can run for days. Turn-based tactics games give you a board, a budget and time to think.

This is the last kind. Nothing happens in real time. Your only clock is a move timer, 120 seconds by default, and when it runs out your turn simply ends. If you came for a shooter or for base building, this is not it. If you want a thinking game with armies, it is.

Your first battle, in order

  1. Press Play Now. The first match is a duel against a bot and lasts 15 turns. The usual default for a room is 30.
  2. You begin with a hero commander, two Swordsmen and an Archer, at a walled headquarters. The first seat starts with 300 gold, the second with 450.
  3. Look at the nearby villages. A village gives 60 gold a turn and takes 20 capture points. A unit banks its current health as capture points each time it captures, so a full-health Swordsman (10 HP) needs two captures.
  4. Spend your gold at the headquarters or the barracks. A new unit cannot move on the turn you buy it, so buy early.
  5. Press End Turn when you are done. You may move and act with as many units as you like first.

Damage involves no dice. The game shows a forecast before you commit, so you always know what an attack will do.

The army at a glance

Every unit is strong against some and weak against others. Strong means 1.75 times damage, weak means 0.6 times.

UnitCostWeak againstRole
Swordsman100Cavalry, TanketteCheapest unit that can capture

Archer200Cavalry, SwordsmanRange 3, cannot fire at an adjacent enemy
Cavalry300Spearman, TanketteMoves 5, charges, disperses buildings
Catapult450CavalryRange 4, double damage to walls, must stand still to fire
Dragon600Gryphon, Archer, MusketeerFlies, hits ground and air (second age)

The full counter list is in the strategy guide.

Your hero

Each player picks one of four hero commanders, and all four are free. Picking the hero also claims the army colour.

HeroHPMovesSkill
Warlord243Whirlwind: hits all adjacent enemies for 8
Archmage173Meteor: 11 damage, range 4, small blast
Ranger184Arrow Volley: 7 damage, range 4, recharges fastest
Sky Marshal185Inferno: 9 damage, range 3, and he flies

The hero is the one piece you cannot lose. Skills fire once their charge is full, and charge grows by one at the start of each of your turns.

How a match is won

Kill an enemy commander or capture his headquarters and that player is out. The last side standing wins. If the turn limit arrives first, the score decides. Because your own hero can die, keep him behind the line. Gold comes from what you hold, so your army grows as you take villages, mines and castles (the Keep on the board). Each unit also costs 13% of its price in upkeep every turn.

On a phone the default map fits one screen, with nothing to install.

Playing a friend

The host shares the room link. Your friend opens it and sits down, with no account and no download. The host can switch on "Link only" so the table disappears from the public lists. There is no password and no invite code. The same idea is covered in more depth in our guide to two-player strategy games online.

To see what a turn looks like before you try it, read how turn-based war games work. On our site lately a finished Warfront match has run about 11 minutes.

What to do next

Play the 15-turn battle once, losing included. Then try the Learn to Play button on the game page, which starts a short match with coaching on. After that, pick a hero and a bot level (easy, medium or hard) and start a real duel.
