Minesweeper Online: Play Free, No Download or Sign-Up
You can play Minesweeper online for free right now: open the game page, tap Play Now, and you are seated against a bot on the Classic field. There is no download and no sign-up. One thing to know before you tap: this is not the solo game with a timer. It is a 2-player race on one shared field, against a bot or a friend.
Play Minesweeper online in one tap
On the Minesweeper game page, Play Now puts you at a table with a bot on Classic, the default field. A finished match takes about 3 minutes (median from our own match log, November 2026). The bot comes in three levels: Easy, Medium and Hard. It never sees where the mines are, so it has to deduce them from the numbers, just like you.
The screen reads from top to bottom like this: a turn banner; two seat cards with the flag count and move clock of each player; a bar with the number of mines still buried and a two-coloured score bar; then the field. The default move clock is 60 seconds per turn. If it runs out, the game taps a random playable cell for you. It is not a forfeit.

How it differs from the solo game you remember
| Question | Solo game you remember | This game |
|---|---|---|
| Who do you play? | The board, alone | One opponent, a bot or a friend, on the same field |
| First tap | Often protected | Not protected. A random first tap hit a mine in 18.05% of 2000 tries on Classic (simulated boards, not real players) |
| Tapping a mine | You lose | You plant a flag, score +1, and keep your turn |
| Flags | You place them by hand to mark guesses | No manual flags. A flag appears only when you tap a real mine, in your colour |
| Tapping clear ground | Opens cells, you carry on | Opens cells (empty areas open outward) and the turn passes |
| How it ends | Hit a mine or clear the board | The player with more flags wins; the match stops early once the leader cannot be caught |
So a mine is the good result, and a clear cell is the cost of a wrong guess. Numbers still mean the usual thing: the count of mines in the 8 cells around it, diagonals included. If you need a refresher, read how to play Minesweeper.
Three clear taps in a row give your opponent one extra turn. Once per match, a player who trails by 5 or more can use the Square Bomb, which resolves a 3x3 area. The bomb button on the screen shows Locked or Ready, and tapping it explains why.
Minesweeper online with friends
Open a room from the game page and send the room link. Anyone who opens it can take the second seat. If you want only invited people to find the room, switch on the room option Link only: it hides the room from the lists, so only people with the link can join. There are no passwords. Two seats is the limit, and which seat moves first is decided at random. The full duel rules are in the 2-player Minesweeper guide.
Minesweeper on your phone
The field is tall and narrow on purpose, so it fits a phone held upright. Classic is 9 cells wide and 16 tall. Touch is built around that:
- Press a tile and it sinks. A magnifier appears above your thumb and shows the target and its neighbours.
- Slide to correct your aim. Release outside the field to cancel the tap.
- Pinch to zoom. A fit button appears while you are zoomed in.
- You do not need to hold anything down to flag. There is no flag mode, because tapping a mine plants the flag by itself.
An Android app is also available on Google Play, with the same game.
The five fields: which are free
Only Classic is open to everyone. The other four need a one-match board ticket, paid with in-game coins. If the host of a room has that ticket, anyone can sit at that table. Sizes below are width x height in cells.
| Field | Size | Mines | Look and mine placement | Access |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic | 9x16 | 25 | Grey raised tiles; mines placed uniformly | Free |
| Canyon | 10x16 | 26 | Sand with red rock walls; cells touching rock are 3x likelier to hold a mine | Board ticket |
| Quarry | 9x16 | 24 | Granite blocks; no two mines ever touch | Board ticket |
| Crossroads | 9x17 | 24 | Flowery meadow with stone walls; one quadrant is mirrored into the other three | Board ticket |
| Hot Zone | 9x16 | 24 | Charred crust with glowing cracks; mines gather in a few hot pockets | Board ticket |

Rock tiles cannot be tapped and never hold a mine. Forced guesses can happen on any field, because boards are not checked for solvability. To see how luck and logic split, read is Minesweeper luck?.
If you wanted a solo clock game
This is not that. There are no difficulty presets, no timer race against yourself and no game over for stepping on a mine. The closest thing is a bot match: open a room with an Easy bot and use the match to practise reading numbers. For the grey board that inspired the look, see classic Minesweeper online.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Minesweeper online for free without downloading anything?
Yes. Open the game page and tap Play Now to be seated against a bot on the Classic field, with no download and no sign-up. Classic is open to everyone; the other four fields need a one-match board ticket.
Is this the same as solo Minesweeper?
No. It is a 2-player race on one shared field, against a bot or a friend. Tapping a mine plants your flag and scores a point, and the first tap is not protected.
Can I play Minesweeper online with friends?
Yes. Open a room and send the room link to your friend. If you turn on the room option Link only, the room is hidden from the lists and only people with the link can join.
How do I flag a mine on my phone?
You do not need a flag mode. Tapping a cell that hides a mine plants a flag in your colour and scores a point. A magnifier above your thumb shows the target, and you can slide to correct or release outside the field to cancel.
Is there a Minesweeper app for Android?
Yes, there is an Android app on Google Play. The game also runs in a phone browser with the same touch controls.
Which Minesweeper fields are free?
Only Classic is free for everyone. Canyon, Quarry, Crossroads and Hot Zone each need a one-match board ticket paid with in-game coins, although anyone can join a table whose host has the ticket.
